Miroslav Somol graduated from the Law Faculty of Charles University in Prague (1975) and postgraduate studies at the Institute of State and Law of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (1984). After graduation, he worked in the sphere of foreign trade and international economic relations. Between 1993-96 and 2001-2005, he held the post of a Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade with the responsibility for the trade, foreign trade policy, and, in the second period, also for European integration, as he led EU accession negotiations on behalf of the ministry. Also, he worked abroad as a commercial attaché in Syria and as an ambassador at the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the UN European Office in Geneva. During this period, he was, among others, the chairman of Economic Commission of the UN for Europe and later the chairman of the UN Conference for Industrial Development.
