SME Characteristics

Small and medium-sized enterprises are currently defined as businesses that:

  • have fewer than 250 employees; and

  • have total assets not exceeding EUR 43 million or turnover in the most recently closed accounting period of no more than EUR 50 million.

(These limits are applied to the sum of all undertakings that are linked to or affiliated with the enterprise.)

This definition is based on Act No 47/2002 (on SME support), which lays down the definition in keeping with EU rules, i.e.  Commission Regulation (EC) No 364/2004 of 25 February 2004, amending Regulation (EC) No 70/2001.

Statistically, SMEs accounted for more than 53% of last year’s total Czech exports.
